History

Helping families navigate change

The Aspen Family Business Group, LLC was founded in 1987 as a consulting resource to help families successfully navigate change to achieve harmony and prosperity.

We came together as a group of consultants who each had their own practices. As a collective group we developed content and disseminated knowledge about families in business together. The Aspen Family Business Group became one of the thought leaders in the emerging field of family business consulting.

In addition to our individual and collective work with families over the years, we also held workshops for and mentored other advisors to assure that families receive the best possible advice. Wealth advisors, lawyers and accountants were frequent regular attendees.

Our work and the individuals in the group have been recognized with many honors and awards.

Aspen Family Business Group members and invited guests gather annually for a weekend retreat to discuss current economic, business and social concepts and topics that are relevant to families in business and our work.

Before the weekend closes, we distill our take-aways into actionable tools and methods for working with families. It was during one of our Salons that we conceived of a new model where we remove barriers to our services thus providing access to families much more broadly.

We have been working over the past two years to bring this new model to life.

Code of conduct: an integral part of a family business toolkit

There are many aspects of transitioning a family business from one generation to the next: choosing a successor, establishing a timeline, preparing the next leader, transferring responsibilities and “passing the baton” in a thoughtful, purposeful manner.

Using wisdom to build strategy in your family business

Wisdom is using the energy of Hall’s balance-in-tension well. Each family or business structure is a set of relationships and as such is a wellspring of opportunities for creativity and innovation.

Values & vision in a time of war

These days, two distinct visions around a set of values are clashing in Eastern Europe. Like every crisis, that puts so many things up in the air. We’ve barely caught our breath from COVID-19 and now this!

Part 3: “The dinner party changed everything.” Things can turn into other things. People can become family. And, when those miracles happen, the good that flows feel boundless.

Part 2: “Doing business at the wedding.” In family business we often stand at crossroads. We ask, “Who will be our new CEO?” Or, “How shall we grow our business?”

The thickness of blood in family business (1 of 3)

Part 1: “Everyone gets it but the CEO.” In family business we often stand at crossroads. In these moments we seek guidance which, broadly speaking, comes from realms of the spiritual and of the empirical. Here, we focus on the spiritual.
