Who needs a family constitution? The future harmony of your family and continuity of your business may well depend on going to the trouble of writing one.
Families like to see themselves as informal and free-form, so their usual first response to the suggestion that they create a family constitution is that it seems utterly pointless. “Who needs it?” they say. “We know each other well enough. We can sit down and work things out when they come up.” And the parent-owner, if he or she is honest, will add: “My family knows where they stand and what to expect. I make the rules. Why put things in writing?”

David Bork founded the Aspen Family Business Group in 1987 when he brought together Leslie Dashew, Sam Lane, Dennis Jaffe, and Kathy Wiseman to implement an early program for families in business in Aspen, Colorado. David was a pioneer in the field of advising business-owning families, authoring one of the first books in the field, Family Business, Risky Business.

Leslie Dashew has specialized in working with families in business for almost 40 years. She brings her prior experience in family therapy and organizational development to her practice.

Sam Lane, PhD, was headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas and had more than 28 years of experience as a management consultant and psychologist specializing in working with family businesses. He successfully created and implemented individualized approaches to the unique challenges faced by family enterprises.

This is a collaborative resource, created by the staff and/or board members of Aspen Family Business Group.

Joe’s specialties were families in business, families of wealth and family foundations. Since 1978, he helped families communicate better, plan for their future, and grow their tangible and intangible assets.
